Getting to Leptokarya
Most visitors fly into Thessaloniki (SKG), about an hour and a quarter up the coast, or into Athens (ATH) if they are pairing Leptokarya with the south. Compare fares across airlines first, then decide how you will cover the last stretch from the airport.

From Thessaloniki airport you have three sensible options: a pre-booked private transfer straight to your accommodation, a hire car if you plan to explore (we strongly recommend one), or the train and bus if you are travelling light. A private transfer is the least stressful after a flight, especially with children or luggage.

Getting around: hire a car
Leptokarya itself is small and walkable, and the beach, tavernas and train station are all close. But the best of Pieria is inland and up the mountain: Litochoro and the Enipeas gorge, Ancient Dion, Old Panteleimonas, Platamonas Castle. Local buses are limited and infrequent, so a hire car is the single thing that most changes what you can see. Local suppliers based around Pieria and Thessaloniki airport are usually better value than the big international desks.
Days out and tickets
The archaeological park at Dion and the royal tombs at Vergina are the two unmissable culture stops, and a guided day tour is the easy way to do Mount Olympus or Meteora without planning the logistics yourself. Booking ahead saves queueing in the midday heat.

Staying connected

Money and small practical bits
- Carry cash. Many family tavernas and beach bars prefer cash, and some do not take cards at all. There are ATMs in the village, but draw out before a day trip inland.
- Water shoes. The beach is sand mixed with fine shingle in places, and the most repeated visitor tip is to pack a cheap pair.
- Sunbeds come with a drink. Loungers and umbrellas at the beach bars are yours when you buy something, which is the normal etiquette here.
- Swim in the morning. The sea is calmest and clearest early; an afternoon breeze can put a light chop on the water.
- When to come. June and September are the sweet spot for warm sea, fewer crowds and lower prices. July and August are hottest and busiest.
